Mobile games continue to be large companies, especially in the last year, when people around the world have been mainly forced inside and on the virtual world because of the pandemic. Despite its popularity, however, some franchises and big names in the game industry are always absent from this space. The Playstation of Sony has long been drawn from direct involvement in mobile games, but it could change soon, but not the way some could have hoped.
The Playstation of course has hundreds of titles under its roof during its decades of long history. Some of them even made smartphones, although especially through unofficial and legally doubtful means. Some fans of these titles would probably like to play those of their mobile devices, but that will not happen that way.
Instead, Sony will adopt a strategy similar to that of Nintendo with some of his games on Android and IOS. Gamesspot reports that PlayStation Head Jim Ryan has raised the topic of the PlayStation brand coming on mobile at the recent meeting of the company’s business strategy. There, Exceed said “PlayStation has a huge catalog of the various First Party IP that can transmit to Gaming Smartphone and complete our AAA games or our online service games.”
It should be noted that Ryan talks about intellectual property, the company and the legal term used to designate properties, franchises, brands and characters. It is more likely that Sony will create new games around these popular IPs designed specifically for mobile titles rather than existing port. The latter is at least technically possible, however, because the moving emulation scene has proven.
Whether pricing better than Nintendo in this strategy remains to be seen. Nintendo brought some personalities and franchises well known to the mobile, including the emblematic Mario, but few they are actually proven to be even profitable remotely. Some say that Nintendo can not just be mobile and Sony could have better chances in this regard because it makes its own Xperia smartphones.
